Tough defense help San Mig Coffee to win the game

San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone dug deep into his bag of tricks with his Mixers facing elimination in their Philippine Cup semifinals series against Rain or Shine.
After their Game Five victory, Cone credited his team’s switching defense to try to halt the Elasto Painters’ vaunted attack — and for at least this match, the tactic worked.
Rain or Shine shot just 32.9 percent from the field, including 4-of-26 from beyond the arc. Cone played only three big men — Marc Pingris, Joe Devance, and Rafi Reavis — all game long, and instructed them to use their quickness to chase the Elasto Painters’ deadly guards along the perimeter.
Mark Barroca also performed well, hounding Rain or Shine’s point guards from baseline to baseline and setting the tone for the Mixers’ defense.
Only one Rain or Shine player, Larry Rodriguez, scored in double figures with 14 points. The Elasto Painters’ top guns, Lee and Jeff Chan, were both miserable from the field. Lee scored eight points but was just 3-of-12 from the field, while Chan was even worse, scoring just three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
But the defensive adjustment also had some casualties in the San Mig Coffee rotation. Yancy De Ocampo, who has started at center for the team through most of the tournament, did not play a single minute.
“They’ve been picking on him defensively, and we haven’t gotten enough from him offensively,” said Cone, who said De Ocampo could still see action later in the series.
Clash of styles
Cone noted that the series is a clash of styles between his system and that of Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, who prefers to spread out minutes among his players.
While he said he admires Guiao’s system, Cone said it’s not for him. “As my mother would say, there’s more than one way to skin a cat,” said Cone. “We’re gonna stay through a seven, eight-man rotation.”
But a big key for the Mixers, according to Cone, is getting contributions from role players who only make short appearances during games. He praised Jonas Villanueva, JC Intal, and Wesley Gonzales for playing hard in their limited minutes without complaints.
“They said, ‘Give me two minutes and I’m gonna play with all my heart,” said Cone.

San Mig Coffee’s campaign in the Philippine Cup wouldn’t be ending in 2012.
With their backs against the wall, the Mixers grinded out a 79-67 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in their last game of the calendar year Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena to stay alive in their best-of-seven Philippine Cup series.
“The New Year’s celebration is the farthest thing from our minds right now,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.
The win cut down San Mig Coffee’s series deficit, 3-2, and the Mixers did it despite missing James Yap for most of the game due to foul trouble.
The San Mig Coffee superstar was limited to just two points after playing just 23 minutes. He picked up his fourth and fifth fouls in quick succession with still more than nine minutes left in the third quarter, and did not check in until the 5:32 mark of the fourth quarter, when San Mig was already up, 71-62.
The rest of the Mixers stepped up with their main man out of commission. Joe Devance top-scored with 20 points, while Marc Pingris posted 18 points and 10 rebounds. Peter June Simon and Mark Barroca took care of the perimeter game for San Mig Coffee in Yap’s absence, scoring 16 and 11 points, respectively.
“They really dug deep, they played heavy, heavy minutes,” said Cone.
Pingris, Simon, and Barroca each played at least 41 minutes, with Devance logging 37.
Without its top offensive weapon, San Mig Coffee turned to defense, limiting Rain or Shine to just 32.9 percent shooting from the field. Only one Elasto Painter, Larry Rodriguez, scored in double figures with 14 points.
Rain or Shine’s top guns were silent from the field, with Paul Lee shooting 3-of-12 and Jeff Chan, 1-of-8.
Cone said San Mig Coffee’s only focus would be winning Game Six, which is set on Thursday, January 3, at the same venue.
“They beat us twice in a row. And we believe we can beat them twice in a row,” he said.
The scores:
SANMIG COFFEE 79 – Devance 20, Pingris 18, Simon 16, Barroca 11, Reavis 6, Villanueva 3, Gonzales 3, Yap 2, Intal 0.
RAIN OR SHINE 67 – Rodriguez 14, Cruz 9, Lee 8, Ibanes 8, Matias 7, Norwood 5, Belga 4, Quinahan 4, Tang 3, Chan 3, Tiu 2, Arana 0.

Meralco defeats San Mig Coffee, Faces Alaska

The Meralco Bolts took care of business Sunday, defeating the San Mig Coffee Mixer 87-77 at the SM Mall of Asia Coliseum to set up a quarterfinals showdown against the Alaska Aces.
With the Mixers already safely ensconced in the quarterfinals — San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone opted to rest hurting superstar James Yap — it was the Bolts who dominated the game for their eighth win in 14 contests.
Veteran forward Reynel Hugnatan led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds for Meralco, which finished with the eliminations with the same record as the Aces. The two teams will start their best-of-three playoff encounter on Wednesday.
Meralco’s victory means Rain or Shine will face Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the quarterfinals in another best-of-three series.
Both of those pairings will kick off Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
San Mig Coffee, meanwhile, will have twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals against Petron in the series that begins Thursday, also at the Big Dome.

Ginebra and Meralco to determine playoff seedings

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Meralco take on separate opponents to determine their respective playoff seedings in the final playdate of the Philippine Cup elimination round Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The Bolts take on the San Mig Coffee Mixers in the opener at 4 p.m. before the Gin Kings battle the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m.
Meralco and Ginebra are tied at fifth and sixth places, and their quarterfinal opponents will depend on the results of Sunday’s games.
Because Meralco won its lone match with Ginebra this conference, a win by the Bolts or a loss by the Gin Kings will result in a playoff pairing between Meralco and Alaska as well as Rain or Shine and Ginebra. Each of those matchups will be a best-of-three series.
A win by Ginebra and a loss by Meralco would allow the Gin Kings to leapfrog the Bolts. That would set up a quarterfinal clash between Rain or Shine and Meralco as well as Alaska and Ginebra.
The games don’t hold any meaning for Talk ‘N Text and San Mig Coffee, which are assured of finishing first and second after the eliminations, respectively. The two teams are locked in against their playoff opponents, with each squad enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Tropang Texters will be taking on eighth seed Air 21, while the Mixers will face No. 7 Petron Blaze in the quarterfinals.

This was despite Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao missing most of the action after being caught in traffic traveling from Pampanga.
In the nightcap, the San Mig Coffee Mixers clinched the second spot with a 107-96 victory over the GlobalPort Batang Pier. With the win, San Mig Coffee assured itself a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals over Petron.
It would also allow Mixers coach Tim Cone to rest James Yap, who is suffering from a bone spur in his right ankle, for their final assignment against Meralco on Sunday.

James Yap will not play in their final elims game

A bone spur in his right ankle has been slowing down San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap, according to coach Tim Cone.
The two-time Most Valuable Player has been noticeably slowed down in the last two games for the Mixers, failing to hit double-digits each time.
“He has a bone spur on his foot. We have him X-rayed two days ago. But I think he’ll get through it and he will be ready for the playoffs,” said Cone, who added his top gun has been playing through pain for most of the conference.
“He plays with a lot of stuff that people don’t know,” said Cone. “Injuries, such as this one, are tough to overcome, but the real therapy for it is rest, so I want to have him rested in our next game.”
Cone said he’s planning to rest Yap in the Mixers’ final assignment on Sunday against Meralco.
But despite hurting, Yap said he’s willing to play through all of it.
“Maraming beses na akong naglalaro na mayroon akong nararamdaman pero hindi ko ipinapaalam sa tao,” said Yap. “Kaya gusto ko pa ring maglaro sa Sunday. Pero ang mas sigurado, maglalaro ako sa quarterfinals.”
Nic Ocampo, the team’s physical therapist, said Yap’s injury isn’t a serious long-term injury.
“It was caused by the wear and tear mainly because of all the years he’s been playing,” said Ocampo. “Pero pwede naman niya ipa-treat yan after the playoffs dahil kaya pa naman siyang ilaro.
“Yung mga ganitong klaseng injury, ang best treatment is through strengthening and balance.”
San Mig Coffee is set to play Petron in the quarterfinals, with the Mixers enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage by virtue of being the No. 2 seed.

Simon formalized their hold of the No. 2 spot as San Mig Coffee wins over Global Port

Needing to win one win to secure the twice-to-beat prize for the Philippine Cup quarterfinals, San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone knew his team would to struggle for it.
The Coffee Mixers did it the hard way, hacking out a 107-96 win against a GlobalPort squad that fought hard despite playing merely for pride Friday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Peter June Simon came up big, picking up the slack for the hurting James Yap with 27 points to lead the way for the Mixers, who formalized their hold of the No. 2 spot in the quarterfinal round.
“I know it wasn’t pretty, but it’s a lot harder than what people see from the outside,” said Cone.
“There’s the other team which has gotten loose and another team looked stressed. Looking at each other, you know there’s going to be a real battle. Certainly, there’s no easy games in the PBA.”
San Mig Coffee did not get its rhythm going until the early part of the fourth quarter, when the Mixers outscored the Batang Pier, 34-18, to secure their 10th win in 13 games.
“We just took care of business tonight. I told my players that all we have to do is walk out there and win. Let’s not misunderstand our expectations. We don’t have to win by 25 points, but we only need to win by one and win,” said Cone.
The Mixers still have one game left on their elimination round schedule against the Meralco Bolts, but are locked into a playoff duel against the underachieving but dangerous Petron Blaze Boosters.
“Anybody could pick a harder opponent, but Petron. There’s a saying that you don’t choose who to play in the playoffs because you need to go through everyone of them,” said Cone.
GlobalPort ended its campaign with just a lone win to show in 14 games.
The scores:
San Mig Coffee 107 – Simon 27, De Ocampo 18, Pingris 14, Barroca 12, Ramos 8, Yap 8, Reavis 7, Devance 5, Intal 4, Villanueva 4, Gonzales 0.

Despite of arriving late, coach Yeng Guiao happy for Rain or Shine

After arriving at the game in the late stages of the third quarter, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao chose to play the role of mere spectator while watching his Elasto Painters dismantle Barako Bull Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“Mas masarap pala yung nanonood ka lang kasi walang pressure,” Guiao told InterAKTV.
Guiao watched the end of the game, which saw seldom-used guard Jonathan Uyloan play a career performance as well as Paul Lee’s return to form.
Uyloan finished with 18 points, three steals and two blocks while Lee had 16 points on top of six assists and four rebounds.
“Masaya kami to see Paul Lee back in the game as well as to see Jonathan Uyloan playing his best game,” said Guiao.
“Nakaplano na talaga na mag-start sa amin si Jonathan because yung starting unit namin, we already plan it a day before the game. Before the game, I called up Coach Caloy, I gave him very general instructions because I know he can coach anyway.”
Garcia had been the Elasto Painters’ coach before Guiao took over two seasons ago.
“Our objective is to regain some momentum after two losses and be able to play Paul Lee, to allow him to get the feel of the game. True enough, he played a good game and that’s a good sign for us. With the way he played, we can say that he will certainly add a new dimension to our game going to the quarterfinals,” said Guiao, who was stuck in traffic coming from his home province Pampanga, where he serves as vice governor.
“I left Pampanga around 1:30 p.m., pero may construction sa NLEX, mahaba yung traffic. I was still confident I can make it, but then, again, I was caught in traffic sa Mindanao Ave. When I went sa loob ng UP, traffic na naman, so nag-C5 ako. At around 5:30 nasa C5 pa lang ako. So that’s all for the traffic update.”

Rain or Shine erased Barako Bull

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao was caught in heavy Friday traffic, failing to make it in time for the start of the Elasto Painters’ match against Barako Bull at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
But Guiao had specific instructions for chief deputy Caloy Garcia — starting the game with seldom-used Jonathan Uyloan before bringing in the returning Paul Lee at the six minute mark in the first quarter — and the tactical moves worked to perfection in an easy 116-101 victory.
Uyloan played the game of his career, finishing with 18 points, three steals, and two blocks, while Lee played as if he hadn’t missed Rain or Shine’s past 18 games dating back to last season, contributing 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
They led six players who scored in double-figures as Rain or Shine finished the elimination round with a 9-5 record.
“Unexpected naming ma-le-late si Coach Yeng, but when he called up, we thought na baka hindi na siya umabot,” said Caloy Garcia, who took over the reins of the squad. “His first instruction when he called up is to field in Paul Lee after six minutes, then have Jonathan starting for us.
“The nice thing about this win was everybody stepped up.”
Jervy Cruz also scored a career-high 23 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field.
Jeff Chan and JR Quinahan each had 11 points while Beau Belga chipped in 10 for the Elasto Painters.
The loss eliminated Barako Bull (4-10) from playoff contention, giving the Air 21 Express (5-9) the last ticket to the quarterfinals.

Chris Tiu itching for his first win after injury

0-2.
That is the win-loss record of Rain or Shine since prized rookie Chris Tiu returned after re-injuring his hamstring.
“I’m already 0-2 since my come back,” Tiu told InterAKTV. “Although I was playing better now, I have yet to win a game since my return.
“I can’t wait to get that win.”
Tiu had his most productive game in the PBA Sunday night against San Mig Coffee, finishing with 12 points and 5-for-5 shooting from the line.
He showed poise playing the point guard position for Rain or Shine, helping the team nearly complete a rally from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter before falling just short late in the game.
Rain or Shine also lost to Ginebra last Sunday in Tiu’s first game back.
“We were up against two of the most popular and more formidable teams in the league, but that’s not an excuse. I’m still looking to get that win. Hopefully, it will come against Barako Bull,” said Tiu.

James Yap wants to bounce back for San Mig Coffee

James Yap struggled all game long against Rain or Shine, but his team got the job done.
Seeing his team victorious made him forget about his nine-point output on miserable 3-of-15 shooting as the Mixers fortified their chances of clinching one of the top two spots, which come with them a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
“Yun naman ang mas importante, yung manalo. I expect my teammates to step up every time na nag-struggle ako,” said Yap in an exclusive interview with InterAKTV.
“Let’s give credit din sa defense ng Rain or Shine. Maganda depensa nila.”
But while Yap vowed to have a bounce back game in the team’s next outing against GlobalPort, he understands that his team is facing a dangerous opponent.
“Out na sila di ba? That makes GlobalPort the most dangerous team. Pinakamahirap na kalaban yung team na naglalaro na lang at wala nang bearing ang game,” said Yap.
“Kailangan talaga naming itong paghandaan. We need to get ourselves focused on the game.”

Paul Lee will return against Barako Bull

Paul Lee will return for Rain or Shine’s final assignment in the elimination round against Barako Bull, according to coach Yeng Guiao.
“That’s my intention,” said Guiao in an exclusive interview. “Parati naman siyang naka-suit up, pero ang question lang is kung kelan siya maglalaro. I intend to use him in our game against Barako Bull to prepare him for the playoffs.”
Lee, last season’s Rookie of the Year, has been joining the team’s practice sessions and looks ready to get back.
“Of course, there’s a difference between practice and actual game. Sa ensayo, iniingatan siya ng mga kakampi niya. Sa laro, teams will attack him and pounce on him,” said Guiao.
The Elasto Painters have recently welcomed another returning player, rookie Chris Tiu, who has played the team’s last two games.
Tiu is excited on the prospect of playing alongside Lee.
“I’m excited. What more can you ask for this team? This team really has strong character and I’m really proud to be part of this group,” said Tiu. “We’ve been playing good basketball, and I think we will be better if we have Paul Lee playing for our team.”

The San Mig Coffee Mixers tightened its grip on second place in the Philippine ciup standings, but not before surviving a scare from the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 93-92, Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
It was the ninth win in 12 games for the Mixers, who had to make two crucial defensive stops in the last nine seconds to come away with the victory.
San Mig Coffee squandered a double-digit fourth quarter lead against Rain or Shine, which also rallied from a big deficit to win in the two teams’ first meeting.
The Mixers were still up four points, 93-89, with 11.5 seconds when Marc Pingris fouled Jeff Chan from beyond the arc. The Rain or Shine sharpshooter made all three of his free throws, before the Elasto Painters forced a turnover on Peter June Simon, the game’s top scorer with 24 points.
That gave the Elasto Painters two final chances to win the game, but Pingris foiled an attempt by Chan before Rafi Reavis forced Beau Belga into a miss.
With the win, San Mig Coffee moved a game and a half clear of Rain or Shine for second place, which comes with it a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals. The Elasto Painters’ win-loss record dropped to 8-5.

Barako stop Ginebra to win number six

Barako Bull held off a late charge by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to come away with an 83-79 victory Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The win comes at a crucial time for Barako Bull, which snapped a four-game losing streak to move into a tie with idle Air 21 for the final quarterfinal spot with identical 4-9 records. The Energy Colas did it at the expense of what had been the hottest team in the tournament, as Ginebra had won five straight matches coming into the game.
“Siguro dahil sa napakagandang laro ng Ginebra last time, the tendency is to go down. But without taking away the effort of the players, we really played a hell of a defense. Ngayon pa lang gumagana yung defense na gusto naming mangyari, which we tried to adopt ever since my good friend coach Junel Baculi was coaching the team,” said Barako Bull coach Bong Ramos, who won his first PBA game since returning to the helm of the squad.
“Our defense was there even during our game against Meralco where we limited Sol Mercado, the No.1 scorer in the league as well as Mark Cardona and Ronjay Buenafe. Sadly, nakalusot lang yung mga role players nila, like Kelly Nabong.”
Barako Bull led for most of the first half, before Ginebra opened with a hot third quarter to briefly take the lead, 39-38, on a Rico Maierhofer layup. But the Energy Colas ended the period with a 13-7 run to take a 52-45 advantage heading into the final period.
The rampage continued for Barako Bull in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 11 points, 58-47, on a Ronald Tubid three-pointer. Mark Caguioa scored four points in a quick 6-2 Ginebra run, before Barako Bull rattled off a 10-2 blast to take its biggest lead, 70-55.
There was plenty of fight left in Ginebra, which rallied with Caguioa on the bench once more to cut the Barako advantage to just five points, 76-71. But Roger Yap, who scored 14 points and handed out five assists, hit a crucial three-pointer with less than a minute left to push the lead out of reach, 79-71.
Ronald Tubid scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures for Barako Bull, while Leo Najorda had 12 of his 14 points in the second half.
Ginebra’s win-loss record dropped to 7-6 into a three-way tie for fourth to sixth places with Alaska and Meralco.
The scores:

San Mig Coffee and Rain or Shine collide in a crucial encounter that would take the winner closer to the No. 2 spot in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Mixers (8-3) and the Elasto Painters (8-4) meet at 6:30 p.m. with the winner getting an inside track for one of the remaining top two spots, with Talk ‘N Text (11-2) is expected to grab the top spot. The first and second place teams will enjoy twice-to-beat advantages in the quarterfinals.
In the opener, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel tries to extend its winning streak against Barako Bull at 4:15 p.m.
“Rain or Shine is always a challenge to play against. We’ve played a number of significant games against them lately and this is another one since the winner will have the inside track on the number two seed,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.
“We’ve got a healthy lineup for the first time in a long time against them, so we’ll see if that can give us an edge this time.”
San Mig Coffee is coming off an 89-80 win against Air 21 to bounce back from a 29-point defeat at the hands of the Tropang Texters.
The Elasto Painters of coach Yeng Guiao are coming off a 97-90 loss to the Kings to slide to third spot.
“This is our most important game. This will determine our future this conference. If we win, we’re still in the hunt for the top two,” said Guiao.
In the opener, Ginebra hopes to stay in the top four with a win against the slumping Energy Colas.
The Kings are in solo fourth place with a 7-5 win-loss mark while Barako Bull, at 3-9, must win its last two matches to stay on track for at least a playoff for the No. 8 spot.
“Maganda at nananalo kami but we still cannot let our guard down,” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen. “Barako Bull’s fighting for their life so all out sila. We have to keep our concentration.”

The Alaska Aces took care of business in Dipolog City Saturday, downing a tough GlobalPort side, 101-95, for their second straight win in the Philippine Cup.
Calvin Abueva led Alaska with 21 points and 12 rebounds in his second game back from illness, which has coincided with the Aces’ return to their winning ways after four straight defeats.
The result took the Batang Pier officially out of contention after suffering their 11th loss in 12 games, while giving the Aces a better chance at finishing in at least sixth to avoid a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the quarterfinals.
But Alaska had to survive a late scare from GlobalPort, which rode on the hot hand of Rey Guevarra to cut a 12-point fourth quarter deficit down to just two points, 79-77. The Aces responded with seven straight points to gain more breathing room.
The Batang Pier still had plenty of fight in them, as Guevarra strung four straight points to keep within striking distance, 86-81, with two minutes left. Steady free throw shooting by JVee Casio and Tony Dela Cruz, however, put the game out of reach late despite a spree of three-point shooting from Willie Miller.
Alaska’s win-loss record improved to 7-6 to tie Meralco at fifth and sixth spots, one game ahead of seventh-placed Petron.
Placing at least sixth is crucial for any team, since the seventh- and eighth-place teams have to beat twice the second- and first-place teams, respectively, to advance to the semifinals. The third-place team faces the sixth-place team while the fourth- and fifth-placer battle in best-of-three quarterfinals series.
The scores:

Ginebra hopes to extend its winning streak; Meralco eyes a bounce-back game against Barako Bull

Meralco eyes a bounce-back game while Barangay Ginebra San Miguel hopes to extend its winning streak to five as they battle separate foes in the crucial double-header of the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Bolts face Barako Bull in the opener at 4:15 p.m. while the Kings entangle with Air 21 in the main tiff at 6:30 p.m.
Ginebra and Meralco are tied in the standings at 6-6 and they try to stay in the hunt for a top four finish after the elimination phase.
Their opponents are in a must-situation with the Express clinging on the No. 8 spot with 4-8 mark while the Energy Cola are a shade behind with 3-8.
“The game tomorrow is very important for us. ‘Yung mindset kailangan pang-playoff kasi sila rin ganoon,” said Kings mentor Siot Tanquingcen.
“Maganda rin nilalaro ng Air21. Breaks of the game lang sa end game kaya natatalo. Dapat focus kami sa execution ng offense at defense,” he added.
Express coach Franz Pumaren knows Ginebra is on a roll and they need to bring their best game to stand a chance.
“Crucial game for us. We are playing a team on a winning streak. We need everybody to contribute, stay focus and stick to our game plan because the crowd will be a big factor,” said Pumaren.
The Air 21-Ginebra encounter marks the first time Mike Cortez will be facing his former team since he was traded to the Express for big man Yousef Taha.
In the opener, the Bolts try to bounce back from an 88-85 defeat at the hands of Alaska with a victory over the Energy Cola of coach Bong Ramos.
“We didn’t close out a close game the way we wanted to against Alaska. Another situation must be corrected. We will persevere. We want to bounce back strong after a tough loss,” said Meralco mentor Ryan Gregorio.

'It was a hard decision', said Tanquingcen after benching Caguioa

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel pulled off another trademark come-from-behind win over Rain or Shine Sunday night, but this time, Mark Caguioa watched his team do it from the bench.
After the game, coach Siot Tanquingcen explained his decision to take out the reigning Most Valuable Player in the crucial stretches of the fourth quarter, when the Gin Kings completed its comeback from a 17-point deficit.
“He was really not his usual self tonight,” said Tanquingcen. “Even yung mga free throws niya, nag-struggle siya. He’s a good free throw shooter, pero tonight, sumablay siya ng dalawang sunod.”
Tanquingcen added that it wasn’t an easy choice, especially with how Caguioa has carried the team over the past few games.
“It was a hard decision. In fact, we were debating on it with the coaching staff,” said Tanquingcen.
“Mahirap dahil siya yung tipo ng tao na gusto mong kasama mo sa giyera. But he was struggling. Yung ibang tira niya was even short and he was not in his usual element.”
Caguioa shots just 6-of-22 from the field and 4-of-9 from the foul line. Despite struggling with his touch, Caguioa still managed to score 18 points, the second-most for the team.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel unleashed its never-say-die spirit and turned back Rain or Shine, 97-90, to extend its winning streak to four games in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings crawled back from a 17-point deficit midway through the third quarter, holding the Elasto Painters to just one field goal in the final 2:33 to join Meralco in fourth place with a 6-5 win-loss mark.
LA Tenorio dished out a near triple-double performance with 20 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists and piloted Ginebra’s rally in the fourth quarter.
Mark Caguioa added 18 points, though he was not around when the Kings made the run. Rookie Chris Ellis chipped in 15 points and punctuated their team’s victory with a reverse windmill dunk that pegged the final score.
“We came out really flat. The good thing, we stuck together and got through this one,” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen, who also drew 12 points from Billy Mamaril.
“We really struggled. Other people just stepped up and it’s a good indication for our team.”
Jayjay Helterbrand came off the bench and contributed six points, seven rebounds and five assists while rookie Yousef Taha also provided quality minutes in the fourth period with his hustle plays on defense.
Rain or Shine, which dropped to third place with a 8-4 mark, led by 15 at the half, 57-42, and was still in control after TY Tang hit a triple to start the final quarter for a 78-69 lead.
But Tenorio anchored a momentum-swinging 14-8 exchange he capped with a three-pointer to close in at 86-83 with 2:53 remaining.
Jeff Chan push the Rain or Shine to five points, 88-83, with a running jumper with 2:33 left in the game. But the Gin Kings unloaded 10-0 blast to take a 93-88 lead with just 16.7 seconds left.
JR Quinahan ended Rain or Shine’s drought with an undergoal stab but time was not on their side, allowing Ginebra to pull off another escape act.
Jervy Cruz led the Elasto Painters with 17 points and 12 rebounds and was 13-of-13 from the free throw line. Larry Rodriguez added 14 points, while rookie Chris Tiu returned from injury and contributed eight.

Talk ‘N Text assured itself of a playoff for an automatic semifinal seat after nipping Air21, 100-94, in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters needed big plays down the stretch to deny the Express from coming back in the game. They booked at least a tie for one of the top two spots with a league-leading 10-2 win-loss mark. The first and second place qualifiers enjoy twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Jimmy Alapag fired 18 points and dished out six assists while Jayson Castro and Ranidel de Ocampo each had 16 points for the defending champions, who were challenged by the pesky Air 21 side to the hilt.
“Credit to Air21. They played us tough,” said Talk ‘N Text head coach Norman Black, who sent the Express to their third straight loss for a 4-8 mark.
“At the start of the season, the goal is to get into the top two spots and we accomplished that today at least for a playoff. Now the tough road begins. We play Petron next and Ginebra.”
Mike Cortez paced Air 21 with 23 points to go along with his nine rebounds, while James Sena and Nino Canaleta added 18 and 13 points, respectively.
Cortez, Canaleta and Sena were responsible for keeping the Express in the game, combining for 19 points in the third quarter as they trailed by just one point, 70-69, entering the fourth quarter.
They even took the lead at 75-74 on Sena’s basket before Talk ‘N Text responded with an 8-2 assault to take an 82-77 spread.
Renren Ritualo’s three-pointer pushed Air 21 within three points, 88-85. But Kelly Williams hit two free throws and Alapag hit a decisive three-poiinter for a 93-85 cushion with 3:47 remaining to take the game for good.
“Jimmy came into the game with a lot of energy. He’s just being himself tonight,” said Black.
The scores:
TALK N’ TEXT 100 – Alapag 18, Castro 16, De Ocampo 16, Fonacier 11, Williams 9, Peek 9, Dillinger 8, Carey 8, Reyes 2, Aban 2, Alvarez 1.

League-leader Talk ‘N Text eyes a playoff for an automatic semifinal seat while Barangay Ginebra San Miguel tries to extend its winning streak to four when they face separate foes in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters battle Air 21 in the opener at 4:15 p.m. before the Gin Kings bracing for a royal battle against Rain or Shine at 6:30 p.m.
With a win-loss 9-2 mark, defending Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text shoots for a win that would put one foot in the top two spots, which come with a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
Talk ‘N Text is coming off a 92-63 shellacking of San Mig Coffee to stay on top of the team standings.
“We can’t get let our guard down. We’re only one game ahead of the other teams,” said Norman Black. The Elasto Painters and the Mixers are just one game behind Talk ‘N Text with identical 8-3 marks.
The Express are holding the No. 8 spot with a 4-7 slate and they need to win their remaining three games to make sure they get a slot in the next round.
In the main tiff, the Gin Kings, toting a 5-5 mark, collide with Rain or Shine, which is fresh off a come-from-behind 102-98 win over Meralco.
Ginebra is on a roll, winning its last three games, but coach Siot Tanquingcen knows his team has to bring its A-game to stand a chance against a tough Elasto Painters squad.
“We need this game very badly,” said Tanquingcen. “So, it’s important for us to keep our focus and execute properly on our offense.”
The Kings are also coming off a 96-93 close win over Alaska to reach .500 after a 2-5 start.
Rain or Shine rallied back from a 26-point hole against the Bolts in notching the improbable victory in a highly physical encounter.

Petron Blaze eyes its second straight win against a lowly opponent while Alaska tries to get back on track as the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup resumes on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Boosters battle tail-ender GlobalPort at 4:15 p.m. while the struggling Aces hope to put an end to a three-game losing streak when they take on Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in a 6:30 p.m. encounter.
Petron ended its own slump with a 96-86 win over Rain or Shine and coach Olsen Racela hopes it will lead to a winning streak.
“I hope it’s a start because this will gonna be a crucial stretch for us. Kailangan naming ma-sustain ito,” said Racela, whose team is holding a 4-6 win-loss mark.
They are up against a 1-8 Batang Pier who are in danger of becoming the first team to be booted out of the season-opening conference.
GlobalPort needs to sweep its last five games to have a shot for a spot in the next round.
In the main game, Alaska seeks to put an end to its three-game losing streak against the Kings, who have won two games in a row after dropping five straight.
“Every game is crucial for all teams at this point. It really helps that we won early so we are still in the middle of the standings despite tough losses,” said Aces head coach Luigi Trillo whose team is coming off a 104-103 loss to Air 21.
“Hopefully we get back on track. Ginebra looks like a potent team again.”
Alaska prevailed in their first meeting, 87-69, last October 28 and Gin Kings coach Siot Tanquingcen hopes they can avenge that defeat.
“Though struggling, Alaska is a very tough team to play. They’re 2 to 3 deep in each position,” said Tanquingcen. “We have to take care of the ball better. Last time we played them, we gave up 25 turnover points to them.”
Ginebra is holding a 4-5 win-loss mark.

PBA fined Air 21 center Rob Reyes P10,000, hit on Abueva

comments
The PBA has fined Air 21 center Rob Reyes a sum of P10,000 after an incident last Wednesday in the Express’ victory over the Alaska Aces.
Reyes tangled with Calvin Abueva in the fourth quarter of their game, with the Alaska rookie pulling the veteran slotman down to the floor. Reyes responded by hitting Abueva with an open palm in the face.
Although no foul was called by the referees on the play, the league upon review upgraded the hit to a flagrant foul penalty one.
After meeting with the player Saturday, PBA commissioner Chito Salud sanctioned Reyes for the foul and “for trash talking/taunting” Abueva after the play.
“Reyes’ acts are aggravated by the fact that they were unnecessarily committed when play had already shifted away from both players,” Salud said in a statement.
Earlier, the league suspended referee Jimmy Mariano for four playdates for missing the Reyes foul.
“I am also reminding our players to refrain from needlessly exposing other players, along with themselves, to serious injury and undue hurt through intentional and blatantly dirty and rough play as this will invariably be met with penalties and sanctions from my office.”

PBA will suspend referee Rey Yante for his goaltending call on Talk ‘N Text-Alaska Game

Another goaltending issue, another controversy.
The PBA will reportedly suspend referee Rey Yante for his goaltending call on Talk ‘N Text forward Kelly Williams late in the Tropang Texters’ 94-92 loss to the Alaska Aces.
Virgil Villavicencio, the head of the media bureau of PBA teams under the MVP Group of Companies which includes Talk ‘N Text and Meralco, told InterAKTV that they have been informed by the PBA about the suspension.
(InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com, the news site of TV5, which is also part of the MVP Group.)
“We were told that Referee Yante was suspended for six playdates,” said Villavicencio.
The PBA did not answer inquiries by InterAKTV asking for confirmation of the suspension.
It was the second game in the past week involving a goaltending issue late in the game. During the San Mig Coffee-Barako Bull match last Sunday, controversy arose after a late swipe by Rafi Reavis on the potential game-winning shot by Enrico Villanueva. Despite complaints from the Barako Bull side, the PBA affirmed that the play was legal and was not goaltending.
In Williams’ case, the former MVP was called for a goaltending on a layup by Cyrus Baguio. But television replays showed that the ball was still on an upward motion toward the backboard before Williams made contact with it.
Last month, the league suspended another referee, Jun Marabe, for an erroneous foul call during a Ginebra-Rain or Shine match.

"He made us look good single handedly like that," said Alaska head coach Luigi Trillo. "It's nice to see them scratch and claw. (It) builds character for this kind of team."
After a Ranidel De Ocampo miss at one end of the court, the Aces had 5.3 seconds remaining to win the game. Trillo called a timeout to set up the final play that had Casio receiving the inbounds from Tony Dela Cruz. The gutsy guard drove to the rim, evading the Talk n' Text defense for the lead with 2.4 seconds remaining, 94-92.
After a timeout by Norman Black, the Texters then went with Fonacier, who had his short jumper rattle out as Talk n' Text suffered its first loss of the season.
"We're also lucky. Coach Norman put a good play in the end. Sometimes, its just like that, breaks," added Trillo.
A 28-16 third quarter gave the Texters a 74-68 lead entering the payoff period. After a Bam Gamalinda three and a technical foul on Alaska head coach Luigi Trillo, Talk n' Text found themselves with a comfortable 11-point lead, 83-72, with 6:04 remaining in the game.
The Aces then went to Baguio, who hit back to back drives. A defensive stop by Abueva at the other end led to a Casio four-point play with 3:08 remaining to cut the lead to two, 83-81.
At the 2:44 mark, Larry Fonacier snapped the Aces' 9-0 run with his own tough trey, before Casio went on automatic mode, hitting back to back threes to give the Aces the lead, 87-86. The former La Salle standout was slapped with a foul at the other end that led to three freethrows for Alapag to give the Texters a two-point lead yet again, 89-87.
A split by Williams made it a three-point game at the 1:24 mark, before Abueva hit an open three off a Casio assist to tie the game, 90-all.
After the game-tying trey, Calvin Abueva fouled out with 1:06 ticks to go, while Kelly Williams hit two freethrows to give Talk n' Text a two-point lead. Williams was then slapped with a goaltending call on a layup by Baguio with 28.6 seconds remaining to tie the game yet again, 92-all. In the ensuing play, the Texters went with De Ocampo for a baseline jumper that bounced off the rim, leading to the Casio game-winner.
The triple threat of Casio, Baguio, and Abueva combined for 55 big points to lead the Aces. Super rookie Abueva had another all-around game with five boards, four assists, and five steals.
Alapag paced the Texters with 17, while De Ocampo added 15. Ryan Reyes and Williams chipped in 13 each in the losing effort.
It is the first time that the Aces have won against the Texters since 2009. The Texters still have a hold of the top spot in the standings, though, with a 6-1 win-loss card, while the Aces secure the second spot with 5-2.
